Storm cleanup continues on BBC&S campus

Cleanup from the fierce storm that hit Baptist Bible College & Seminary on June 26 continues. The storm uprooted or damaged an estimated 100 trees and caused damage to other areas of the campus. About 15 trees around the BBC&S signature pond were removed.
Some fallen trees and branches are being chipped and used for future projects on campus, said Director of Facilities Andy Harkleroad. Larger trees are being hauled away and sold.
The damage attracted local media attention, with area newspapers and television stations running items. The loss of trees around the iconic pond, popular with local residents as well as the BBC&S community, prompted one neighbor to send in a check.
The cost of cleanup and repairs is likely to exceed $20,000.
Damage across campus
The storm pulled some trees out of the ground and snapped others in half, leaving them scattered across sidewalks and paths. The winds also pulled down dropped ceilings in Buckingham Hall and Ridley Hall, lifted up several terra cotta tiles from the roofs of Jackson Hall and Buckingham Hall, and snapped a metal light post outside Ridley Hall.
Due to the projects, some of the general upkeep and improvements on campus, such as painting, will be done later, said Hal Cross, Vice President for Business and Finance.
Volunteers lend a hand
The Volunteers Week held July 12-18 provided extra hands needed to move the project along. In addition to storm-related work, volunteers also remodeled two offices in Jackson Hall. About 80 people participated.
Workers removed tree stumps, filled-in holes, and planted grass seed. From a positive perspective, a new lawn area is being created in a section adjacent to Jackson Hall, giving a very nice view of the pond.
