Missions Conference brings special focus

"Live Like the World is Dying" was the theme for 2009 Missions Conference at Baptist Bible College & Seminary, a unique three-day focus on campus in early February.

The event featured general sessions each morning followed by two breakout sessions lasting until noon. In the afternoon, missionaries on campus made themselves available to meet with students.


Students were drawn into the focus by learning how everyone, not just people directly involved in missions, can affect the global mission field.

"As a Bible college, we want to educate, inform, stimulate, and motivate students, faculty, administrators and staff to do the Great Commission," said BBC Associate Professor John Jackson. "While the local church is God's ordained instrument in fulfilling and spearheading the Great Commission, we are obligated here at BBC to teach and mentor those who are not only our future church leaders but also our present church leaders."

One distinct and powerful offering was Living Lifeline, a session that allowed students to become engaged in missions and ministries by moving through a series of video stations showing the work and needs of current missions around the world. The stations encouraged students to pray for people and needs that were highlighted.

A paper prayer wall allowed students to write out prayers and praises and a world map demonstrated the need for prayer and support all over the world.

BBC&S partnered with the Association of Baptists For World Evangelism for the 2009 program. The three-day conference included presentations by ABWE President Dr. Michael Loftis; Dr. Gil Thomas, who has been serving as a missionary to Portugal; Dr. Dale Marshfield, ABWE Coordinator of International Theological Education; and Paul Atkinson, Director of Student Mobilization for ABWE.

In addition to the sessions and workshops, speakers, students, and others participated in a Missions Emphasis Week at Baptist Bible Seminary.
