English Education Program

At the core of our program is the belief that the written word is a powerful, life-changing tool. Indeed, it is a foundational part of human experience, and without it the structure of our society would cease to exist. Yet, communication involves more than merely speaking a language. It begins with an understanding of God as the source of our ability to think, reason, and create. This lays the groundwork for a biblical worldview that is critical for educators because you have the power to shape the thoughts and beliefs of the next generation. At BBC, you will develop and strengthen your biblical worldview through challenging Bible and theology classes as well as hands-on ministry experience.

The English Education program will not only teach you how to communicate more effectively, but it will equip you to teach others to do the same. Literature, grammar, writing, and journalism are just a few of the areas in which you will receive teaching instruction and experience. At BBC, you will have the unique opportunity to develop as an effective ministry leader whose ministry context is the English classroom. If you are ready to begin a career of ministry in which you can use the language arts to teach others about your Savior, Baptist Bible College can help you get there.

At BBC, your education is stretched beyond the classroom to provide you with ample opportunities for hands-on experience. The Anchor, our school newspaper, and The Tower, our school yearbook, provide excellent opportunities for students in this program to gain practical experience. Assisting and observing competent English teachers and meeting student teaching requirements will also equip you for effective ministry leadership in the English classroom.

Core Courses in the English Education Program

BBC gives you a strong foundation to think through what truth you will communicate as you complete 42 credit hours of Bible and theology courses. A required set of General Studies courses supplement that foundation by enabling you to consider the world in which you will minister. You will then build upon this foundation as you complete over 40 credit hours studying the specific disciplines of your field and determining how you can best apply your unique strengths, gifts, and abilities. The core courses of this program include the following:

What Happens After Graduation?

Upon completion of the program, graduates will have completed coursework equivalent to a double major in Bible and English Education, and will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Bible.

You will receive certification from the Association of Christian Schools International to teach English in Grades 7-12. You will also be eligible to apply for Pennsylvania state certification, which will allow you to teach in public schools.

The state of Pennsylvania shares certification reciprocity with nearly every state, so you will most likely be able to teach in the state of your choice.

The English Education program also prepares graduates for the next step in their academic careers. Many graduates pursue master’s and doctorate degrees immediately following graduation or shortly thereafter. Some graduates have chosen to pursue their studies in one of seven programs offered in Christian School Education at Baptist Bible Graduate School. Other graduates have attended various graduate schools to study a wide range of educational programs including Administration and Curriculum & Instruction.

Real People

“BBC provides opportunities in the classroom and out on the field to learn and teach. This supplies students with an in-depth understanding of the career ahead. Having professors who love what they do, love students, and love God gives students a glimpse of what ministry should be like in their own lives.”

- Kayla Knopp, BBC Student

Ashley Spence"My experience at BBC helped me to understand that teaching is a ministry, not just a profession. The professors guided me through each of the requirements of the program and were always available to meet my needs. I left BBC with a biblical and realistic perspective of education and the preparation necessary for the demanding schedule of teaching.”

– Ashley Spence, BBC graduate, English teacher at Twin Tiers Christian Academy, Breesport, NY
