ALUMNI PRAISE AND PRAYER

July 2013 Update

Ron & Chris Self  (1977)

Dear Faithful Prayer Partners,

Happy 4th of July!

We are happy to report that early on July 3 we arrived safely in Buenos Aires. We never expected to be away for so long! Thank you for your prayers. We will try to quickly get oriented, and then I have a deacons meeting on Friday night, Chris speaks at a Ladies Tea on Saturday, and we have a church business meeting on Sunday! So, we will "hit the ground running."Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf.

Last Sunday I was able to attend Starkey Rd. Baptist Church as their missions team gave its report and testimonies on their trip to Joao Pessoa, Brazil. Our church in Don Torcuato was able to send 10 men to join them on that construction team. This Sunday, I will be able to hear the full report from our people here. It was a wonderful blessing for everyone involved, as Americans, Argentines and Brazilians worked together on a church building and a camp property to be used for the glory of God! This was our church´s first participation in an international missions project!

We are also very pleased that next week we will send out our first international "summer-missionary." One of our young people will accompany a group from Maranatha Baptist Bible College to China. We are grateful to God for his provision of over U$S 2,500.00 to make this possible, for the participation of our daughter and several sister churches to make this a reality, and also to MBBC for including us in this opportunity. Please be praying for Marcos Lewandowski as he travels to China next Wednesday, that God would use this trip to confirm God´s call on his life and also that he would have an effective ministry during his summer there.

On July 13 the ministry team from Maranatha Baptist Bible College will arrive. They will be with us for 3 weeks, ministering through recitals, teaching and children´s work. Please pray for them as they travel and and that God would grant them an effective ministry once again in our churches.

Please continue to pray for the Youth Conference in Mendoza, near the Andes Mountains on July 14-20. We now have 72 signed up, with a "waiting list" of 8 young people, above the 64 that will travel on our bus. Please pray that we would be able to find alternative transportation for these 8 and others that might want to go. Then, please pray for spiritual growth and victories during those days.

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf. We truly need the power of God, both in our ministry and in our lives.

July 9 Update

Dear Faithful Prayer Partners,

Happy independence Day - Argentina. July 9 is our "4th of July," so today is a holiday here. We enjoyed fellowshiping with several of our members today, including the 87th birthday of one of our men, and then we participated in a cook-out at another home, enjoying a delicious lamb barbecue!

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past
week. We had an uneventful and safe trip from Atlanta to Buenos
Aires, and are happy to be getting settled into a routine after so many weeks!

Now that we are back in familiar surroundings, I can truly appreciate how much my eye-sight has improved after the last surgery. I preached for the first time on Sunday, and instead of recognizing the people only in the first four rows, I could see clearly to the back row and beyond! After only being able to read from an i-pad with a very large font, I could easily read my Bible. And, although this has no effect on my preaching at all!!!!, after not being able to see the clock on the back wall at all, I could easily read the clock, even without my glasses! I probably don´t have to tell you that every day I wake up and thank the Lord for vision that I thought was lost forever. Thank you for your prayers.

I have an appointment for a routine check-up on Friday with my surgeon here in Argentina. Please pray that he will find everything looking good. Also pray that God would give me an opportunity to share the gospel with him. God has opened doors with him in the past and I am praying for a further opportunity on Friday. Thank you for praying.

On Sunday, we enjoyed a very special service. We heard a report from our men who went to Brazil and helped to build a church building and a camp. The enthusiasm of the men was contagious and the experience was a great blessing for our church family. We then heard from one of our young men who leaves for China on Wednesday to minister there with a group from Maranatha Baptist Bible College. This will be the first time that our church has sent out even a short-term summer missionary to a foreign country. God used 7 different churches to proved the U$S
2,600.00 needed for this ministry. Please be praying for Marcos as he ministers and also seeks to know God´s will for his future. We were then able to hear a report from Dr. Marcelo Martinez Ferro on his recent medical trip to China. He shared a Power Point presentation on the culture of China and included a taped conversation in which he witnessed to his Buddhist guide. Please pray for her salvation. We then shared a message from the Word of God from 2 Corinthians on how giving not only meets the needs of the saints, but also produces thanks to God, glory to God, an example to others and a testimony of obedience to the gospel. Thankfully, time is not a factor in our services and we were able to enjoy a service of delighting in what God is doing!

On Saturday, Chris was able to speak at a ladies meeting in our church, with 55 ladies in attendance, including a number of visitors.
The ladies report that they enjoyed a great time of fellowship, a challenging message and an opportunity to share the gospel with other ladies.

This Saturday, the ministry team from Maranatha Baptist Bible College will arrive. Please pray for them as they travel and and that God would grant them an effective ministry once again in our churches.
They will be with us for 3 weeks. We think we have everything ready for their arrival and ministry!

This Sunday a group of 71 young people and leaders will leave for our
annual winter youth conference near the Andes Mountains. Please pray
that God would work in the lives of our young people during the week of July 14- 20. Also pray for Dr. Bruce Meyer from Maranatha as he preaches 4 times, for me as I preach twice and for Javier Fernandez from our church as he preaches along with 3 other Argentine pastors.
Pray that God would powerfully apply His word to the lives of our young people.

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf. We truly need the power of God, both in our ministry and in our lives.

7/15 Update
Dear Faithful Prayer Partners,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.

On Friday I had my routine check-up with my Argentine eye surgeon. He said everything looked great, for which we are very thankful. Please continue to pray for his salvation. It is a challenge to share the gospel with him when the waiting room is full of people, so please pray that God would provide a more relaxed opportunity to give a gospel witness.

Also on Friday, our "summer-missionary" to China safely arrived at his destination after a 38-hour trip. He has now begun his ministry there with the Maranatha China team. Please pray that God would bless his ministry and also use this experience he seeks to discern God´s will for his life.

On Saturday the Maranatha-Argentina team arrived safely, although one piece of luggage has not yet been located. The last we knew it was in Dublin. Please pray that it would arrive soon, with everything in it!
The team arrived on Saturday morning and ministered on Saturday night to our youth and then at a Men´s cook-out. On Sunday they did concerts in two different churches and then on Sunday night they boarded the bus for the 12 hour trip to Mendoza for our annual Winter Youth Conference. Tonight they did the special music and the preaching for the first service of that conference. Please pray for them as them minister in the conference and in many churches over the next 3 weeks.

On Sunday and Monday, a group of 71 young people and leaders travelled to our annual winter youth conference near the Andes Mountains. We
have arrived safely and are enjoying the conference. Please pray
that God would work in the lives of our young people during this week.
Also pray for Dr. Bruce Meyer from Maranatha as he preaches 3 times, for one of the young men from Maranatha as he preaches, for me as I preach twice and for Javier Fernandez from our church as he preaches once along with 3 other Argentine pastors. Please pray for spiritual victories and growth in the lives of our young people. Please pray for us as travel back to Buenos Aires on Friday night.

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf.

7/22 Update
Dear Faithful Prayer Partners,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.

I enjoyed a unique blessing last week when I was invited to attend my son Mark´s ordination council by way of Skype. I was even able to participate, although I am not sure that was a blessing to Mark because I am known for asking difficult questions! However, it was a special delight to see Mark skillfully defend his doctrinal positions and demonstrate his biblical positions. The council recommended Mark´s ordination and he was ordained last week. Now, please pray for the remaining 35% support that Mark and Anahí need so that they can come to Argentina by the end of the year!

Last weekend after church, a group of 71 young people and leaders travelled to our annual winter youth conference near the Andes Mountains. We were joined by other young people from all over Argentina and even some from Chile, with a total of over 300 (which are all that will fit in the church where the conference is held). We enjoyed 3 delightful days, with young people who are serious about living for God, 10 outstanding messages, , the fine Christian music of the Maranatha Team, great food and we even ended with a trip to a mountain resort where our young people could enjoy a day of sledding (many have never seen snow before)! God kept us safe over many miles traveled, including several hours of travel on slippery, snowy roads.
Thank you for praying!

The airline was finally able to locate the lost bag of the Maranatha team. After a week of moving about the world, it came in from London on Friday. However, we are still missing some materials that did not make it, and we will be trying to track those down. Please pray that everything would be located and that it would arrive safely.

The Maranatha team has a full schedule for the next two weeks. Please pray for them as they travel among our churches, singing for the glory of God, giving testimonies and preaching the Word. They will be involved in a local youth conference this week, and many churches at night. Dr. Saxon will also be teaching a module for our Bible College beginning next Monday night.

Please pray for Chris and me as well. With Andrew and Romina on furlough and Mark and Anahi not having arrived yet, we are short of some logistical help as we work with the team. We are thankful for an Argentine deacon in our church who is an excellent translator, but please pray that God would give us strength and wisdom as we carry out our pastoral ministry in our own church while also travelling with Maranatha for these two weeks and teaching them classes and making sure that they are well-fed! There are moments that we need to be in two places at one time! It helps that the Maranatha team is once again made up of an excellent group of young people who are well prepared for their ministry here in Argentina!

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf.
