ALUMNI PRAISE AND PRAYER

January 2013 Update

Ron & Chris Self  (1977)

Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.

A week ago, our son Mark preached in our Sunday services. He did an excellent job, preaching a challenging, expository message from the Word of God. We are enjoying having him here to minister in all of our churches for several weeks. This past Sunday, he preached in his father-in-law's church, and next week will be in our church again. We had seven first-time visitors in our services last Sunday, including Juan Javier and his parents. Juan Javier is a baby who was born without a tail-bone, or the functional organs that would be associated with the tail-bone. He has had multiple surgeries, and is awaiting at least one more. His parents attended our services for the first time. Last night Monica returned, after having attended our Christmas musical, and plans to attend again. Please continue to pray that God would provide the increase as we seek to faithfully communicate the gospel to those around us who are in need of the light of the gospel.
On Sunday night we had the privilege of giving our Christmas offering to our "adopted" church in the town of Lobos. The final amount was $12,407 pesos, which is over $2,000.00 dollars. They used a previous similar gift to put a roof on their church building and will use this gift to lay the floor and put in other finishing details. It was a blessing for both givers and receivers on Sunday night as we rejoiced together at God´s provision!
Our annual planning retreat will take place this Saturday. Please pray for wisdom as we prepare for this retreat and plan and prepare our ministries for 2013. Also pray as I have a lot of administrative preparation to do before that retreat in just a few days.

Please pray for eternal results from two up-coming ministries. First, on Monday we begin our annual Vacation Bible School. Andrew and Romina are in charge of that ministry and have prepared an excellent program. Please pray that many children would attend and that we would be able to preach the gospel to both children and parents. Then, on January 28 we will have our youth camp. We have almost 80 signed up so far for that ministry. Our son Mark will be the main speaker, and our leaders have prepared an exciting week of activities. Please pray for spiritual growth in the lives of our young people and also for the salvation of several unsaved young people who will be participating.

We continue to work on getting approved plans for the construction in Vicente Lopez. Please pray that we could make good progress. We are expecting a work team of 15 from North Carolina in March of this year. Please pray as we make preparations for their visit and that much would be accomplished.

Our daughter Susan spent two weeks with us over the Christmas break. It was a wonderful and very meaningful time together as a family. At the end of that time, Susan decided that she would like to stay for a few extra days and it was something that she could work out to do. After checking with the airlines we found that it was either impossible or the cost was prohibitive to change her flights, depending on the day we requested, because all flights were full (This is typical after Christmas and until about the middle of January here in Argentina). So, on Monday we went to the airport to see Susan off, but upon arrival it occurred to us to ask if she could volunteer to give up her seat on the flight that night. They immediately accepted our offer, and not only did she get an extra day in Argentina, but she received a significant voucher which she can use toward a future trip either to Argentina, or to another destination of her choice. On Tuesday night we did the same thing. On Wednesday night Susan went ahead a flew home to get back to her job. So, the Lord provided Susan with two extra days which we all enjoyed together, and the airline paid her to stay over! We were thankful to the Lord that our attempts for us to the pay the airline for her to stay longer was denied . . . so that the airline could pay us to have her stay longer!

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.

To God be the Glory,
Ron and Chris Self

January 23 Update

Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past 2 weeks.
Our annual planning retreat took place on Saturday, January 12. We had a good day of projecting ministries for 2013, which begin with the school year on March 1, and beginning to plan schedules and strategies for fulfilling the Great Commission through each ministry. Thank you for your prayers.

Our daughter Susan arrived home safely on Thursday, January 10. Thank you for praying! We were blessed to have a couple of weeks with the whole family here in Argentina. That was a rare privilege and we are thankful that the Lord provided that opportunity for us.

Last week we held our annual Vacation Bible School. Andrew and Romina were in charge of that ministry and prepared another excellent program. We had a very good group of children during the week, several dozen for the first time, and we are also thankful for about 50 church workers who helped during the week. We also had the opportunity to meet and minister to some of the children's parents. Then on Sunday we held our closing program, and were thankful that a number of the children and some parentswere present for that service as well. Please pray for eternal results in the lives of the children and for our church as we follow-up on the visitors that attended the DVBS.

Last Sunday our son Mark preached again in both of our Sunday services. We are thankful for his ministry to our people while he is here. We are looking forward to the permanent arrival of Mark and Anahi here on the field. They have now reached 47% of their support need in only 10 months, and have 35 meetings scheduled so far for 2013. Please continue to pray that by the end of next year they will reach full support and be able to join us in Argentina (They will not need language school!). If you would like to invite Mark to speak at your church or if you would be interested if supporting their ministry, I am sure they would be happy to hear from you at: mself86@gmail.com.

I am presently preparing what is called the "Defense Draft" of my dissertation, which is due on February 15. This requires me to make revisions and corrections that my committee has "suggested" and then prepare to defend the dissertation on March 14. Please pray for me as I attempt to wisely budget my time, and as I seek to complete what I hope will be a successful "defense draft" and a document that may impact missions in Buenos Aires and in similar big cities in Latin America.

On January 28 we will begin our annual youth camp. We have almost 90 young people from our church and our daughter churches signed up so far for that ministry.

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.

January 27 Update

Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.

We had good services today, with a good attendance in both the morning and evening services. We had one first-time visitor and 4 or 5 second-time visitors. Please pray for us as we seek to minister to the spiritual needs of these folks.

On Monday morning we will begin our annual youth camp. We have almost 100 young people from our church and our daughter churches who will be attending our summer camp. Our son Mark will be the main speaker, and Andrew and I, along with several Argentines will also be speaking. Please pray for each one of us as we challenge the young people from the word of God. The theme for the week is, "Lay up Treasures in Heaven." Our leaders have prepared an exciting week of activities. Please pray for spiritual growth in the lives of our young people and also for the salvation of several unsaved young people who will be participating.

Next week we will conclude a new members class, with 20 candidates for membership! We are excited about receiving a good number of new members and about having a Baptismal service in March. Please pray that each one would follow through in their obedience to the Lord in baptism and in becoming active members of our congregation.

Next Sunday our son Mark will preach again in both of our Sunday services, then next week Mark, Anahí and Sophia will travel back to the U.S. to continue their deputation ministry. . We are thankful for their ministry to our people while they have been here. Please pray for them as they seek to get to the field by the end of 2013. They reached 47% of their support after one year of deputation, and have 35 meetings scheduled so far for 2013. Please continue to pray that by the end of next year they will reach full support and be able to join us in Argentina (They will not need language school!). If you would like to invite Mark to speak at your church or if you would be interested if supporting their ministry, I am sure they would be happy to hear from you at: mself86@gmail.com.
I am continuing to work on the "Defense Draft" of my dissertation, which is due on February 15. Please pray that God would give me the wisdom and discipline necessary to get everything completed on time. I am working through my final revisions, but there is still a great deal to do . . . and time is running out! Thank you for your prayers.

We continue to work on getting approved plans for the construction in Vicente Lopez. Please pray that we could make good progress. We are expecting a work team of 15 from North Carolina in March of this year. Please pray as we make preparations for their visit and that much would be accomplished.

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.
