January 2013 Update
Jane Schmitz (1983)
Dear Prayer Partners,
Sorry for the delay in writing. A lot of things have been happening. I wanted to wait to write once I had a few answers about my health. My furlough is coming to an end if a few days. I leave from Syracuse on January 8th. This has been a good but crazy furlough.
• Recently meeting a female Cameroonian doctor working in my home church area. She served me a traditional Cameroonian meal. She plans on helping start a clinic in her home village in Cameroon.
• Making new friends and reconnecting with old ones.
• Time with family: meeting some great nieces and nephews for the first time.
• Having water and internet at my finger tips.
• Full financial support and so many generous personal financial gifts.
• Seeing a new church plant and God’s blessings on that work.
• Great atmosphere in many of my supporting churches.
• Refreshment and increased energy level.
• The salvation of a nation friend’s Muslim grandmother. She is so happy to know Jesus as her Savior.
I recently completed all my tests and now we know that I have mild asthma which is causing the shortness of breath. I am now using an inhaler and am already seeing some improvement in my lung capacity. One of the tests done the end of October showed something that needed follow up in 6 months, so now I need to come back to the US and have this test done in early May 2013. There is no reason to be alarmed, but it needs to be checked. Thank you so much for praying for me. This also may help in making decisions about my future…..
The Biteng ministry in Yaoundé:
Recently, my teammates and I made the decision to close the Learning Center. This was where we hoped to plant a church. With much prayer and for a number of valid reasons we believe that closing this ministry is the right thing to do. So what’s next? …. I don’t know. Many people have lots of ideas for me, but I am waiting on God to direct. Is God closing the door for the ABWE team to start a church in Yaoundé? What is He orchestrating? I have been asking for direction and wisdom from the Lord for some time and you have been praying for me as well. This verse comes to mind:
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21
The Lord knows I am ready and willing to do whatever He leads me to do.
I am looking forward to reconnecting with the people of the 2 churches that I have served in and many others. I am also hoping to encourage Pastor Titi in the Olembe church plant. He plans on starting Sunday services in January. I can’t wait to be back and share Jesus Christ with those who do not know Him yet as Savior. I have some moving and unpacking to do as well, since I had moved from my previous rented house. I will be staying in the house of another single missionary who is going on furlough. I am also not sure how soon I will be on internet either, but will try and let you know of my arrival as soon as I can. As I return, I continue to seek God’s will as to whether or not I should stay in Cameroon. Please pray that God would make that clear to me by March, 2013 or even sooner.
Join me in praying and trusting God to lead. I have so many questions that may never be answered this side of eternity. God has always been faithful to lead me in the past, so I am waiting on Him to lead me to my next step. He is my Shepherd, My Counselor, My Sovereign Master and Lord. He is so trustworthy.
Happy New Year, too. May God bless you in 2013. What surprises does He have for us in this next year? Maybe Jesus will come for us. Wouldn’t that be great!
January 11 Update
Just a quick note to let you know I arrived safely in Yaoundé. Thanks for all those who have prayed. Please continue to pray as I seek God's will for my life and ministry. I have connected with some friends and have many more to see. I have heard that Pastor Titi started Sunday services in Olembe. Pray for them as they need a place to rent and need funds to do that. There were 10 in attendance on the first Sunday. Please also pray for wisdom and help from the Lord in the 2 other churches I had been involved in. One needs to find another place to meet as they cannot afford the rent and the other is dealing serious issues and in need of a national leader.
Leaving cold New York state to hot and dusty Africa brings a bit of shock to the system. I am sitting here writing and the music in a church near by is very loud. The traffic was terrible as I had to get a new battery for the car. I forgot not to go out at rush hour, but no one is rushing. We inch along. Thankfully where I am now, I have water, but where I will move it is cut off for 2-3 days. I am now connected and don't know if the internet will work well where I move to, but today it is working. I am so thankful for little things. Many of my things are dusty and dirty and need cleaning. I got my bed room ready to move tomorrow, but will do things gradually. Next week I plan on helping with a conference that provides books for pastors. I also am looking forward to visiting the 2 churches I have served in and to see many friends. Will keep you posted as to prayer needs.
