December 2012 Update

Kurt & Barb Mathews  (1990)

Dear Prayer Partners,

Leah celebrated her 11th birthday on Thursday, the 13th. It was an extra special celebration because we were together with our ABWE Ghana teammates and they all helped us celebrate. We had fun eating pizza, cupcakes and ice cream and playing games like "Who can blow the biggest bubble?" Everyone participated, which made the celebration that much more fun. Leah got lots of exciting gifts like a locking journal with a picture of a horse on it, the game Tetris, yarn and crochet hooks, and gum and candy. Leah invited Christ to be her Savior and was baptized while we were in Ghana, but rededicated her life to Him while at camp this past summer. Leah still loves horses and would like to one day have a ministry that involves using horses to help others. She has recently shown an interest in learning to sew and crochet. She is very excited about our return to Ghana soon and can't wait to see her friends again.

We drove over to the ABWE home office in Harrisburg, PA last Sunday evening (the 9th) to prepare for a week of intensive meetings. Our meetings included training on the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the DISC profile, and Master Planning. For those of you who prayed for these meetings, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! God worked in wondrous ways in the hearts of each team member. Relationships were restored and renewed and a clear vision was cast for the ministry in Ghana. We are still tweaking the wording of the vision statement, but the idea is that we are working toward growing a new generation of passionate Christ followers in Ghana. That will involve our partnering with our Ghanaian brothers and sisters in the areas of church ministries, fellowship of churches, training, and missions (reaching out to other people groups). I'm really excited to go back to Ghana in January and work with my ABWE and Ghanaian teammates to do God's work there. You can continue to pray for God's direction for our family personally; that we would know exactly where He wants us to live and work when we return.

Last night as I was debriefing about these meetings with Kurt's mom on the phone, I told her that I felt like this week was like the icing on the cake for me. We have been working hard towards physical, emotional, and Spiritual healthiness in our family for the past several months. Then this week we did the same with our teammates. God prepared hearts and the Holy Spirit worked in us and through us to accomplish His purposes. I give him all the glory and praise!

We love you all and thank God for you. Thank you for praying and for supporting us. We serve an awesome God!
