ALUMNI PRAISE AND PRAYER

December 2012 Update

Ron & Chris Self  (1977)

Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.
Please continue to pray for the 82 year-old man, Pier, that I met in the waiting room of my eye-surgeon last week. We have interchanged 4 e-mails, discussing everything from the Nicean Creed to comparing the theology of Paul and James! Pier told me that I had "made him read a lot of the Bible." He continues to struggle with a salvation that requires no works. That is typical of the people here because of their religious background. Please pray that the Holy Spirit and illuminate and then regenerate Pier!
Please continue to pray about our Christmas Musical. Last night the choir and orchestra gave us a "preview" of the musical. It was wonderful, and it is so exciting for us down here to have a choir and orchestra that can prepare our Christmas music. Please be praying now for our invited guests and for the work of the Holy Spirit in those who attend.

Thank you for praying about our Annual Business Meeting in Don Torcuato, which was held yesterday. We were pleased with the results. Please pray that God would give us great wisdom as we continue to lead and pastor this church. We are praying for good progress in the months and years to come so that this church can continue to plant daughter churches.

I am very thankful to communicate that I have finished writing the rough draft of my dissertation. Chapter 6 is in the hands of my committee right now, chpater 7 is in the hands of my editor, and I just finished the final chapter, which must now go through the editing process. I will have to await approvals of the remaining chapters by my committee, make corrections which they have "suggested" and prepare the document for my defense, sometime before March 15. It is a relief to complete one phase, and begin another. Thank you for your prayers, as I make corrections and get the entire document ready for the defense. If all goes well, I can graduate in May! Hopefully, by the grace of God, what I have written will contribute something significant to church planting in big cities in Latin America. The entire process has been an incredible learning experience for me!

We continue to work on getting approved plans for the construction in Vicente Lopez. Please pray that we could make good progress on that, and then pray as we are expecting a construction team next March.

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.

To God be the Glory,
Ron and Chris Self

December 9 Update

Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week. We had a good week of ministry for the glory of God.
Please continue to pray about our Christmas Musical. Our choir continues to give some "previews" and we are looking forward to the Musical. We will present it on Saturday, December 22 in our daughter church in Villa de Mayo and then two times on Sunday in our church. Please be praying for our invited guests and for the work of the Holy Spirit in those who attend.
On Saturday we held our annual Pastors and Deacons Christmas dinner. As usual, it was a hot day (You do know that Christmas is a time for outdoor activities, cooking on the grill and sitting by the pool, don´t you?), we had 4 pastors and 10 deacons present with their families, a total of over 50 people. We cooked barbecued chicken, which is not an Argentine dish, but they enjoy it once a year at our house, and sang Christmas Carols and shared what the birth of Christ means to us. Please pray for the leadership of our church. As a "mother-church," we deal with many challenges that some churches do not. Pray that we would continue to grow and be able to start additional daughter churches.

We continue to work on getting approved plans for the construction in Vicente Lopez. Please pray that we could make good progress on that, and then pray as we are expecting a construction team next March.

You may or may not want to read the detail of this paragraph about our hospital ministry. I wanted to tell you what an average day is like there, where so many patients have been deferred to Dr. Marcelo´s hospital, usually in order to be operated on by him. These descriptions come from me, a non-medical layman, so I am explaining what I think I understand! Last Tuesday, the parents of these patients were present in our Bible study: Vanesa and Juan are the parents of Milagros, who was born with her intestines completely outside of her body. Marcelo operated at birth, and put much of her intestines back inside her body, but could not do it all at once (I think the intestines grow larger outside, than inside and cannot fit back inside all at once!), so it will take at least a couple of surgeries to fix this problem. Luciana is the mother of Juan, who was born without a tail-bone and the functions of that area of his body. A few months ago Marcelo re-constructed that part of his body, but had to wait for further surgery to make his intestines function together with that. In the meantime, Juan was back for another surgery that had to be done first. . . so he will soon undergo the third major surgery of his young life (He is one year old). Maria and Luis are the parents of Felipe. He was born with a massive tumor that did not allow his lungs to function at all. The doctors thought that the tumor was in the lungs, but were not sure. They had to put him on a special ventilator that sent oxygen to his brain and body in short quick bursts instead of what a normal ventilator does. After stabalizing him, Marcelo operated on him right in the delivery room, because they could not move him. The tumor was massive, but benign . . . they think they got all of it and as soon as they took it out, everything began to function normally! The parents of Lourdes are both X-ray technicians at the hospital. I think she was born about a year ago without a fully developed esophogus. That is Marcelo's specialty. So, at birth, they did emergency surgery and now they went back in take whatever esophogus she has and make it into one that will function. Lourdes is pesently suffering some complications due to the surgery last week. Matías was born in a city up north and immediately began to turn blue. After some emergency steps, they sent him to Marcelo's hospital. He has a valve that doesn´t work, and therefore his heart does not produce the compression needed to pump blood. Marcelo does not do heart surgery, but someone on hs team will operate on Matías. There were several other parents there with children with similar problems, one with an illness that I can only describe as similar to hepatitis, another with bronchial spams, etc. All of this is a synopsis of our typical "Bible Study audience" every Tuesday. We pray with them and share the gospel with them! Please continue to pray for this unique opportunity that God has given us in the hospital here in Buenos Aires.

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.

To God be the Glory,

Ron and Chris Self

12/21 Update
Dear Faithful Prayer Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful prayers on our behalf during the past week.
This is just a quick note to ask for your prayers on our behalf as we present our Christmas Musical this weekend. We have our "dress rehearsal" on Friday night and then we present the musical in our daughter church in Villa de Mayo on Saturday night and then twice on Sunday in Don Torcuato. Once again this year, we have a full choir and our orchestra will accompany several of the songs. Please pray that many of our invited guests would attend and please pray that the Holy Spirit would bring some to the conviction of sin and their need of a Saviour. Pray that some would come to know Christ as their Saviour on this important weekend.

Thank you for your faithfulness before the throne of grace on our behalf. We count on your prayers for the work here in Buenos Aires.

To God be the Glory,

Ron and Chris Self
